Ninety years’ remembrance

REMEMBRANCE Sunday (November 9) will be marked throughout the borough with a number of services and processions.

In Whitehaven there will be the British Legion Civic Service and laying of wreaths at 11am at the cenotaph, in Castle Park, led by the Rev John Bannister.

This will be followed by a parade through the town centre and then a Civic Service of Remembrance in the Civic Hall at noon. (On November 11 there will be an Act Of Remembrance in St Nicholas’ Gardens at two minutes to 11am).

A service will be held in Cleator Moor Methodist Church at 3pm, followed by a parade. Many services will be marching, led by Cleator Moor Brass. Copeland mayor, Keith Hitchen and his wife Freda will be attending.

In Frizington, a Remembrance Day service is being held in Frizington Fire Station, Main Street, at 2.30pm.

It will be followed by the laying of a wreath at the war memorial in St Michael’s Churchyard. An Act of Remembrance will be held during morning mass at St Michael’s, which starts at 11am.

At Distington there will be a service at the Church of the Holy Spirit at 9.30am followed by a memorial at 11am at the cenotaph.

For the Egremont service, meet at 10.45am by the Co-op car park from where there will be a march to the war memorial for the wreath-laying.

Then there will be a service in the Methodist Church.

At 1pm there will be a service and laying of wreaths at Moor Row war memorial.

A service will take place at St Bees Priory at 10.30am. During the service, a plaque marking a lost war memorial at Sandwith will also be blessed.

The three churches in Seascale – St Joseph’s, St Cuthbert’s and the Methodist – hold their own services and then meet at St Cuthbert’s cenotaph at 11am for a joint service and wreath laying.

At Millom there will be a service at St George’s Church at 10am, followed by laying of wreaths at the cenotaph at 11am.

And at St Luke’s Church, Haverigg, there will be a service at 3pm.

The Remembrance Ceremony at the Fell and Rock Memorial on Great Gable is taking place once again.

This year will be the 90th anniversary of the Armistice and a group from West Cumbria will be holding a gathering there. They will be leaving the National Trust car park at 8.30am on Sunday, November 9.
