Futures columnists

Facing the unkindest cuts of all

YOUNG people are amongst the first to suffer under the coalition Government’s cuts and axing of projects. The Future Jobs Fund, a fund to support job creation for young people who are long-term unemployed, and which aimed to create 150,000 jobs nationwide, many of them in West Cumbria... slashed.

Why not earn while you learn?

WITH fierce competition for jobs, it has never been a more important time to have the best skills you are capable of. But you don’t need to sit in a class all day to get them.

United in their differences

HOW power seduces! And how class – Eton and Westminster: male and pale – unites.

All belts to be tightened

LABOUR must be facing next week with trepidation: the Conservatives with expectation: the Lib-Dems with thoughts of real influence in a hung administration.

Which party will go further or higher?

WITH the election looming I thought it might be worth looking at some of the ideas the three major political parties in England have for higher and further education.

Who teaches best?

EASTER is the traditional time when major teacher unions gather for their annual conferences. This year these will be just after the 2010 Budget and just before the General Election.

College is in good shape for the new decade

AS WE move from one decade to another, it gives us a good chance to review the progress made at Lakes College West Cumbria over the first ten years of the 21st century.

WOW! What a year 2009 was – who will forget swine flu, the horrendous floods and the start of the big freeze?

Students who know about long commutes

I HOPE its not too late to wish everyone a Happy New Year? I spent Christmas and New Year in Nepal trekking up to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) at some 4200 metres where the temperatures were somewhat higher than those found in Cumbria on my return.

Year 9: Subject choices – or is it life choices?

WHEN you reach year nine, the last thing on your mind at the time is your future career. Well that was what I was doing. Taking a step at a time seemed to be the norm for my peers and myself.

Foundation degrees live up to their name

I AM a great supporter of opportunities for progression in learning, especially where individuals can get new skills, qualifications and recognition for achievement in the work-related environment.

Taking stock

AS THIS is the last of my columns to be published in 2009, it is a timely opportunity to look back over the past 12 months – and indeed the past 20 months of my time on the NDA’s nucleargraduate scheme.

A vote of confidence after a look into future

I WAS recently at the launch of a new report from Cogent, the Sector Skills Council covering the nuclear industry, called “Power People – The Civil Nuclear Workforce 2009-2025.” It is an important piece of work which looks at the skills need now and in the future, not only decommissioning but also new-build and defence.

Celebrating past and looking to the future

SEPTEMBER is always one of the busiest months in a college so it is only now I can start to reflect on such a key month in the academic year. We are looking forward to a positive year with all our new and returning students. For our new students this is the start of their journey at Lakes College.
