Can you shed any light on Pica pic?

KIDS and hounds... and plenty of ’em. We know this picture was taken at Dyon School, Pica, in about 1946/47 but what exactly was happening, we’re not sure. Maybe it was a day out of the classroom or a lesson about local traditions... maybe you’re on the photo and can tell us.

do you recognise anyone: The children of Dyon School c1947. Were they having a day out at the trails or a lesson in local traditions? Do you recognise anyone. That's Gwen, towards the right of the picture, the tall girl wearing a hat behind the small boy with an eye patch on his glasses.

It was loaned to us by reader Gwen Goodfellow (née Harrison) of Cleator Moor. She was the only person who could shed some light on another old school photo from Pica, dated c1920, that we previously featured in our nostalgia columns.

It had shown the children of Class III of Dyon School, Pica, a substantial stone building that subsequently was turned into dwellings, and Gwen spotted, right on the front row, kneeling, her mother as a child, Rhoda Bawden.

Gwen, 72, of Jacktrees Road, tells us her mam, who became Rhoda Harrison on marriage, was born in 1913 and was one of nine children, four girls and five boys, of Ben and Rhoda Bawden of 51 Pica Cottages. All the siblings are now dead.

Gwen’s mother died in 1983, aged 70, and her father, George Harrison of Distington, was killed during the war. She herself has three surviving children, 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and another two on the way.

She discovered this picture of her old school among her mother’s things and thinks that the all three classes are pictured. Maybe you recognise someone?
