New engine gives Workington Comets ace performance boost

Workington Comets captain Chris Schramm feels his performance at the weekend showed his true ability around Derwent Park.

Schramm, 26, by his own admission feels he has been struggling around the home track this season and has blamed his scores on not having the right equipment.

However, Schramm had a new engine delivered in time for Saturday’s match against Rye House which saw him score 13 points.

He said: “I knew the new engine would work well but I maybe didn’t expect it to go quite as well as it did.

“I have known all season I have had the ability but didn’t have the equipment because I have been scoring really well away from home.

“We had tried so many different things with the engine I had but nothing seemed to be working so now I have this engine for the rest of the season my scores should pick up round Derwent Park.”

Schramm was guesting for King’s Lynn last night in the first round of their Knock- Out cup quarter-final in place of the injured Kevin Doolan against Edinburgh, with the winner of the two-legged match going forward to meet Comets in the semis.

However, Schramm insisted he would be riding his own race and not looking out for any potential strengths or weaknesses of either team. He said: “Both teams have a significant home track advantage so I don’t think it really matters who we meet in the semi final because we have run both teams pretty close away from home this year.

“I think the way we have been performing at home recently shouldn’t mean we should have a problem against either of the two sides.

“I will just be looking to earn a bit more money for myself.”

Schramm is already looking forward to Saturday’s home match with Glasgow and feels Comets have the possibility of taking another three points from the fixture.

He said: “Everybody has seemed to come to terms with the track which has been the same now for about a month.“
