Plans for Cleator Moor flats refused

NEW plans for six flats in Cleator Moor have been refused.

Planners agreed that the development would be unsuitable for land opposite Ennerdale Road.

Similar proposals for the site were turned down in August last year due to the development’s size and proximity to neighbours.

The new proposal is reduced in height but last week Copeland’s planning panel turned down the re-submission.

Coun John Jackson said: “When we refused it last time it was because of the height and they have come back with an application for a building that is almost as tall.”

Coun Alan Jacob added: “We had a site visit which was invaluable so we could see the congestion on the street.”

The applicant wanted to build six two-bedroom flats in a three-storey block. The empty site is amongst terraced houses and is the location of the former Presbyterian Church, demolished 15 years ago.

Letters of objection and a petition against the plans were received by the council.

Councillors were told: “The overdevelopment of the site would adversely affect the general character and appearance of the road... and would have a significantly harmful impact on its neighbours.”
