Royal Mail paints over Cumbrian village's 'colourful' postbox

Royal Mail bosses have carried out their threat to repaint a Dalston postbox, which had been given a colourful makeover by a mystery DIY enthusiast.

Some people welcomed the bright new look given to the once tatty postbox, which stands in The Square.

But “killjoy” Royal Mail officials were unimpressed by the colourful upgrade, vowing that they would repaint it in standard Royal Mail red.

At the time, Dalston parish council chairman Bryan Craig said: “I think it looks fantastic – that’s how it would have been years ago before the Royal Mail stopped paying to have it in colour.”

Before being repainted this week, the pillar box had a somewhat jazzier and – according to some – more regal colour scheme.

The crown on the postbox painted gold, with the jewels around it in different colours and the ER legend made black and white to help it stand out.

Oh my goodness, be quick, Royal Mail, I've just spotted another one.

Checking on the internet, there are mail boxes in Windsor painted red but with the Royal Crown nicely highlighted in gold.

You had better get down there quick with your red paint tin and paint these gold Crowns out.. I am sure that Her Majesty will not mind or is there one law for Windsor and a different one for Dalston?
