PREPARATIONS are under way for the opening of a tennis centre in Cleator Moor.
The centre, based at Copeland Bowls & Sports Centre, off Wyndham Street, will officially launch with an Open Day on Saturday, April 24. It has three courts and will offer coaching sessions to run three times a week.
Alan Burns, manager of Copeland Bowls and Sports Centre, has also taken on the role of managing the tennis centre.
He said: “It’s quite an exciting project. It’s giving people more activities to get involved in. Tennis is something that people might have never thought of trying before. They have never had the chance to try it in this area.”
The aim is to get more people, of all ages, taking part in sports activities in the town. Organisers say there will also be regular pay-and-play sessions as well as summer courses for children in the school holidays.
Mr Burns added that he hopes there will be a great deal of support for the new facilities with a view to organising a formal tennis club in the town in the future.
The project has been jointly funded by North Country Leisure – which owns the centre – and Copeland Borough Council.
Coun Hugh Branney said: “It is excellent news that by working with North Country Leisure Copeland , Copeland Borough Council has been able to secure the funding for this fantastic new facility and for some top-class coaching, which will help to develop tennis skills in the area. We are committed to providing activities for children and young people and to promoting healthy, active lifestyles, and this will new service will help us in both of these areas. We would encourage people to come along to the Open Day and give tennis a go.”
