WHITEHAVEN’S Maritime Past is the subject for the next exhibition at The Beacon’s Harbour Gallery.
It runs from July 17 to September 18 and alongside paintings from The Beacon’s own collection. Works from both Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tullie House, Carlisle, will also be included.
From Tullie House there will be three paintings loaned specially for the exhibition – Whitehaven Harbour, artist unknown; The South Harbour, Whitehaven by George Nelson Jnr and View of Whitehaven by Matthias Read.
From Merseyside Maritime Museum Port and Harbour of Whitehaven, by famous marine artist Samuel Walters, will complete the exhibition.
Whitehaven was one of the most important ports in the country during the 17th and 18th centuries and has a rich maritime past which this exhibition will celebrate.
The Beacon’s curator, Charlotte Stead, said: “We are very excited to be able to include these paintings in this exhibition. Whitehaven has such a rich maritime heritage and it will be great to see these paintings return to the place that inspired them.”
The free exhibition will also show items from The Beacon’s ship model collection such as the Henry Lowther, recently returned to The Beacon’s Museum Collection after almost 20 years of conservation work.
